'Skills and People issues in the Renewable Energy Sector'; A discussion dinner held on Tuesday 13th September 2012 ....
David Bell, Deloittes Partner - Energy, John Watt, Deloittes Partner - Government & Infrastructure, Adam King, Consultant, Deloittes Human Capital Team and Scott Black of FWB hosted a dinner to discuss some of the key skills and people issues in this rapidly emerging sector. During the evening the main findings from recent research conducted by Deloittes were presented and reviewed. Broadly these were that:
- Regulation and infrastructure are more pressing concerns than the availability of skills
- There are concerns over the availability of suitable talent in operations and the supply chain in the future
- There are mixed views on whether the oil and gas sector will provide suitable talent in the future
- The key management challenges over the next three years lie in leadership, retention and performance management
(Note: Deloittes will discuss their research in full at the forthcoming Low Carbon Investment Conference in Edinburgh).
During the lively discussion, it was also agreed that policy makers needed to look more carefully at how the education system can support this emerging sector to ensure that in the future it was producing the right blend of skills through apprenticeships and study at both Colleges and Universities.
Guests representing Scottish & Southern Energy, Iberdrola, Scottish Power, RePower, Scottish Reneweables, Scottish Enterprise, Skanska UK, Exova Group, Carnegie College, Stevenson College, City of Edinburgh Council and Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce contributed to the wide ranging debate.
